FSEG Awards and Honours

  • 2019 – The FSEG research project concerning evacuation from high-rise construction sites won the SFPE (UK Chapter) Best Research Project for 2019.

    “Outstanding, unique and informative research in an area seldom explored. There is great potential to make the construction environment and all those who work in it safer from fire and this research provides data and tools to achieve this objective.”

  • 2018 – The paper “Numerical Investigation of the Fatal 1985 Manchester Airport B737 Fire” (see paper 325) published in the Aeronautical Journal (2017) received the Royal Aeronautical Society Gold Award for 2017.

  • 2016 – Doctoral student Aoife Hunt received the SFPE Foundation Awards – Student Scholar Award.

  • 2015 – Doctoral student Rob Brown and Prof Ed Galea received the SFPE Foundation Awards – First Annual Dr Guylène Proulx, OC, Scholarship.

  • 2014 – The paper “Passenger Response Time Data-Sets for Large Passenger Ferries and Cruise Ships Derived from Sea Trials” (see paper 296) published in The Transactions of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, International Journal of Maritime Engineering (2013) received the Royal Institution of Naval Architects Medal of Distinction for 2013.

  • 2014 – FSEG’s project on the development of a novel emergency signage system won The Guardian University Award for Research Impact.

  • 2011 – The paper “Fire and Evacuation Analysis in BWB Aircraft Configurations: Computer Simulations and Large-Scale Evacuation Experiment” (see paper 250) published in the Aeronautical Journal (2010) received the Royal Aeronautical Society Bronze Award for 2010.

  • 2008 – The paper “Signage Legibility Distances as a Function of Observation Angle” (see paper 211) published in the Journal of Fire Protection Engineering (2007) received the SFPE Jack Bono Engineering Communication Award – awarded to the paper that most contributed to the advancement and application of professional fire protection engineering in the preceding year.

  • 2006 – The paper “CFD Fire Simulation of the Swissair Flight 111 In-Flight Fire – Part 2: Fire Spread Analysis” (see papers 197 & 188) published in the Aeronautical Journal (2006) received the Royal Aeronautical Society Gold Award and George Taylor Prize for 2006.

  • 2003/2004 – The EXODUS group received the European IST Prize from Euro-CASE for development of the EXODUS software suite.

  • 2003 – The paper “Examining the Effect of Exit Separation on Aircraft Evacuation Performance During 90-Second Certification Trials” (see paper 138) published in the Aeronautical Journal (2002) received the Royal Aeronautical Society Hodgson Prize for best paper.

  • 2003 – The EXODUS group received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2002) for evacuation model development.

  • 2002 – The EXODUS group received the RINA/LR Safer Ships Award (Royal Institution of Naval Architects / Lloyd’s Register).

  • 2002 – The EXODUS group received the CITIS Award for Innovation in IT for Ship Operation (Communications & IT in Shipping) for maritimeEXODUS.

  • 2002 – The EXODUS group received the British Computer Society IT Award (the “Oscars of the IT industry”).

  • In addition, the EXODUS team received the British Computer Society Gold Medal.

  • 2001 – The UK MOD announced, after an independent survey of evacuation models:

    “….maritimeEXODUS was selected as the escape tool that most closely meets the needs of the MOD for the development of warship escape design guidance and assessment.”

  • 1999 – The paper “The Numerical Simulation of Aircraft Evacuation and its Application to Aircraft Design and Certification” (see paper 109) published in the Aeronautical Journal (1998) received the Royal Aeronautical Society Hodgson Prize for best paper.

  • 1998Prof Ed Galea delivered the Howard Emmons Lecture at WPI (USA) on 11 November 1998 entitled “The Use of Mathematical Modelling in Fire Safety Engineering”.
